REPORTS TO:                         Social Science Program Director

Kawerak, Inc. is a non-profit organization that relies on federal agency and grant funding primarily to fund positions. This position is funded by agency or grant funding.  This means that this position, as with all positions at Kawerak, is subject to availability of funding each year to continue to fund the position.

The Social Science Project Coordinator is responsible for coordinating two existing projects within the program. The first is the creation and management of the Traditional Knowledge Expert Group, as part of a larger environmental monitoring program. The second is fisheries-focused and involves leading an effort to maintain and enhance regional involvement in federal fisheries and related planning. This position includes administrative activities, frequent communications with Tribes and communities, the organization and execution of research and planning activities, conducting outreach and advocacy activities, participation in and planning of community meetings, scientific conferences, resource management meetings, and other gatherings. The Project Coordinator will also assist with grant writing, the creation of products based on Program work, and writing comment letters to various bodies.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as the main point of contact for Kawerak’s social science of fisheries work.
  2. Establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with, and coordinate and collaborate with, internal Kawerak departments, region Tribes and Tribal members, and external agencies and organizations on salmon- and other fisheries-related activities.
  3. Maintain and facilitate effective community outreach and education regarding the social science of fisheries and related issues to expand and enhance Kawerak’s fisheries-focused social science work.
  4. Work with relevant Tribes to establish the Traditional Knowledge Expert Group; organize and facilitate periodic in-person meetings, virtual meetings, prepare and distribute materials, and create outreach materials for various audiences.
  5. Collaborate with Tribes to develop an understanding of community concerns, needs, and recommendations related to salmon and fisheries via strategic planning workshops, ensuring the incorporation of Traditional Knowledge into this work.
  6. Ensure opportunities for Tribal member involvement in and comment on salmon and other fisheries-related issues at regulatory and advisory board meetings regarding federal policy actions by: 1) completing and distributing effective preparatory and background information (including providing training, when relevant); and 2) facilitating Tribal member participation in virtual and in-person meetings.
  7. Other duties as assigned, as funding allows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or a related field from an accredited college, preferably in anthropology or sociology, plus a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in the social sciences or related fields that includes identifying and addressing socio-cultural issues. Work experience in a related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  2. Experience with grant budget development, management and administration.
  3. Familiarity with social science data management and analysis software or a willingness to be trained.
  4. Computer and keyboarding skills required, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and other applicable software.
  5. Must possess strong written and verbal communication, organizational and planning skills, as demonstrated through the ability to compile, analyze and apply information as evidenced through research, writing grants, budgeting, and completing reports.
  6. Must be self-motivated, dependable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  7. Must be able to work collaboratively with the public, Tribes, and external organizations.
  8. Must be knowledgeable about the cultures, traditions, and ways of life of the communities in the Bering Strait region required; experience in Arctic regions preferred.
  9. Must be able and willing to travel within and outside of the Bering Strait region, including internationally.
  10. Must have or be able to obtain passport and Alaska Driver’s License within two (2) months of hire.
