What is an Instructional Designer?
The Instructional Designer will work with the Training Department, Senior leadership abilities, and Company Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate training and produce instructor-led, self-paced, and eLearning curricula to further transform and enhance Company training and development programs.



What does an Instructional Designer do?

»Consults with managers, SMEs and learners to identify training needs (gaps) and then builds quality, measurable learning objectives to eliminate or mitigate those gaps

»Designs and develops training programs for varying levels of individuals within the organization that align with our company strategy and development initiatives

»Outlines the concept for a course or curriculum, defining needs for the course medium, content delivery, assessments, accompanying materials and complementary learning approaches

»Continually evaluates ways to measure and monitor course effectiveness

»Develops and maintains continual education support materials for reference

»Participates in training industry groups that help identify best training practices/resources and assist in melding those improvements into the Company’s programs and culture



What does it take to be an Instructional Designer?

Required:

»Bachelor’s Degree in a significant field and 2 years of practice in a related field required. In lieu of Bachelor’s, Associate’s Degree in a significant field and at least 3 years of practice in a related field. In lieu of a degree, a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 4 years of practice in a related field required. Equivalent of education and practice may be considered

»Formal training and/or practice in instructional design or technical writing and expertise of adult learning and training practices, principles, applications and methods is required, such as A.D.D.I.E. and SAM

» expertise of instructional theory, including assessment

»Excellent written and oral communication expertise, including the capability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical learners

»Excellent project management and organizational expertise with the capability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous deadlines

» capability to quickly synthesize and write course content located on input from subject matter experts, written material, previous training courses, interviews and other sources

» capability to develop workflows and document business procedures and work methods

» capability to handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information is required

» practice with design platforms (i.e. Articulate, Captivate, or similar training software)

»Familiarity with learning management systems (i.e. Workday, or similar)

»Proficient in Microsoft Office and other software applications

»A valid driver’s license

Preferred:

» practice in Energy & Utilities or services industry

» practice using a Learning Management System (LMS) to coordinate, track, and report on employee training
